I do agree with you Dinesh. Smoke ban in the office, and even near air
vents outside the office can be enforced by all means. But not hiring a
smoker, is definitely discriminatory. In Malaysia, equal opportunity
seems to be a topic that most organizations seem to overlook in their
job advertisements: racial discrimination, gender discrimination,
color/ethnic discrimination, and so on. Yet I've not seen people "fight"
this, to get things "correct"

Language requirement are a bit unique as well. In Malaysia, the national
language is Bahasa Malaysia. English is widely spoken, even with trade
overseas. Chinese/Indian dialects are usually not required for most
jobs, yet the words "required"/"optional"/"preferred" show up a lot in
searches on Jobstreet. These *usually* (not always, obviously) weed out
candidates based on race/ethnicity

And then, we've got ad's that say "- Bumiputra candidates are encouraged
to apply. " (Subject: Linux and OSS Trainers)

[simple search on Jobstreet, as suggested by Yeak, show "preferably with
...", "... only", "...encouraged to"]

Sorry for going seriously OT for the ossig list (and especially to Yeak,
who's thread we've forked)! Just some thoughts, as we are in 2007, 13
years to 2020...</rant>
