just some random thought on foss in Malaysia. you may ignore it if you wanted to.

since it is not easy to promote linux on Desktop, in Malaysia especially, but application like firefox, and thunderbird, maybe openoffice.org doing quite well. either that or i did a terrible job doing it, or the behavior is quite different than in ms product, and the fact they do very strange stuff. most of the reason is really because most game they play can't be run on linux, and the behavior is different is different than windows, according to them, which i don't see how.

maybe we should concentrate on something else, something beyond desktop. there is many places where linux can really take over, a few examples is in the links below

http://www.tuxmachines.org/node/9719
http://linuxdevices.com/news/NS6270733703.html

the first links involve the use of real time linux in a simulator to train pilots. here i'm not trying to show military usage, but one example usage of real time operating system, and most of the rtos is open sourced, maybe if we can utilize this os, especially the open source one, we might create our open source industry.

the second one involve, sbc. another area which foss really shines, or do quite well, maybe we can develop something out of it, since a few phone manufacturer already use linux in their phone. maybe we can create a distro for phones with cooperation of phone manufacturer. not unlike symbian, as in the company structure, but open source. just a thought. why not our own pda, though we will need to figure out the hardware part.

since, we already involve some consumer electronics, aka phones, why not go further, tivo is based on linux, but we can't find it in malaysia, can we? why can't we have something like a tivo, or media center device, since the software already there, like freevo. or using embedded linux in other devices, like video player.

also the government pushes for biotechnology research, they do need high performance computing, right? if so. windows don't really shine in this, while open source solution always appear in this area, who is really providing the computing in malaysia. maybe someone can start? or we really don't have people to provide this type of solution or don't need one?. and if no one is working, we might losing the train.

one more thing, didn't the parliment pushes for open source adoption in malaysia, did any company here do any action on this. like providing solution. or anyone, except mampu. they still working in open source do they?

maybe it is because we don't really have enough people trained in foss?

just a random thought of foss.
